Fresh off their US tour including dates supporting the Smashing Pumpkins (check out these interviews Aan did with Artist Direct, Impose, while on tour with the Pumpkins), Portland’s Aan have three shows beginning this Friday in Washington state, including an appearance at Elkfest in Spokane. Details below…
Portland’s Aan are headed back on the road this month for string of East Coast dates with rock icons Smashing Pumpkins.
Aan is a fearless experimental pop band from Portland, Oregon that mixes heavily textured guitars with rich vocal harmonies. Since forming in 2007, Aan has self-released several CDs and garnered a reputation throughout the Northwest as a progressive force in the independent scene.
The band beckons a bevy of comparisons, but their sound cannot be pigeonholed. The vocal dexterity of lead singer Bud Wilson skillfully reaches the octaves of the late Jeff Buckley while maintaining a timbre that’s much grittier
Their forthcoming LP Amor Ad Nauseum will be the group’s first proper full-length. In the month’s leading up to its release, Aan will continue to tour through the continental US in 2013 in support of their new 7″ for Cool Summer Records, which features A-side “Mystery Life” and B-side “Spiritual Provisions.”
Aan is Bud Wilson (vocals, guitar), Reese Lawhon (bass), Jon Lewis (drums) and Jeff Bond (guitar).

Cool Summer Records Featured In Independent Label Market LA’s Video
Cool Summer Records founder, Dave Mount, was featured in this video from the Independent Label Market LA event that was held back in November. Featuring Southern California’s best independent labels and the people that run them, this video highlighting the ILMLA gives some insight into why there’s still interest in music in the physical form and the importance of having places for people to listen to, shop, and discuss these physical releases.
Summerays Releases Digital Full Length
On New Years Day, Summerays released their first full length to the world. Cool Summer Records proudly released Summerays’ Toyohashi 7”, the shimmering and nostalgia-steeped single from Cleveland surf popper Luke Teeters. On 1/1/13 Teeters unveiled the next chapter in the Summerays story: Summer Daze. The pay-what-you-want debut album is available via Bandcamp and is filled to the brim with the beach born pop gems we’ve come to expect from Teeters’ songbook.
Lead single “Sunshine” is true testament to the feel good vibe of Summer Daze. It’s an upbeat and catchy little love song that ambles along merrily by way of Teeters’ sun drenched and reverb soaked guitar tones. Check it out here, then head over to their bandcamp page to hear the rest!
That should get you up to speed with everything that’s been going on with Cool Summer Records and our bands over the holiday break. There’s so many things we’re beyond excited to share with you in 2013. It’s going to be an epic year!
We at Cool Summer Records know that some of you may have just been introduced to Portland OR’s, Aan, via the video for “I Don’t need Love”, the band’s newest single. Well Aan have been at it since 2007, honing their sound and making great music along the way. In 2011, Aan put out their first vinyl single, the Somewhere’s Sunshine 7″ on Infinite Front. These two songs “Somewhere’s Sunshine”, and “Haunted, Million Ways” were our first taste of Aan’s brand of experimental, psychedelic, avant-pop, piquing our interest, getting us hooked, and ultimately confirming we had to work with this incredibly talented band. We feel that this release may have gone somewhat under the radar and didn’t necessarily get the attention it deserved, so we’d like to make it know that there are still copies of this limited release available. In the era of Spotify, Pandora, and all sorts of other ways to sample new music for free, we encourage you to give this release a listen and if you hear the potential that we heard, spend a little money and effort to purchase a physical copy or at least the download of this classic release. All of the money generated from the sale of this 7″ goes directly to the band to help fund future releases as well as hit the road and bring their incredible live show directly to you. We are absolutely thrilled to announce we will be bringing you brand new music from Aan in the winter of 2013 and cant wait for you to hear how this band has evolved and perfected their sound. We don’t believe in kickstarter, and we assure you Aan’s next 7″ will be released with no crowdfunded goal to reach. We’re not asking you to buy into the idea of Aan’s future release that you haven heard yet, we’re asking you to support a band with a great release that you can hear and purchase right now if you like the band or enjoy the music. Check out the jams below and if you like what you’re hearing you can purchase a physical copy or digital download of the 7″ here.
If you’re in the Portland area this weekend you can check out a great show on Saturday at Mississippi Studios with Nurses, Aan, Hookers, and a DJ set by JD Samson. There’s definitely going to be lots of hometown pride for some of Portland’s best bands at this one!
And if you’re in the Southern California area this weekend you can check out Gardens and Villaat the KBZT Independence Jam in Oceanside, CA as part of a very impressive line up with with Fiona Apple, Best Coast, and Oberhofer.
This past Spring while in Denton, TX for the 35 Denton festival, Aan participated in the Violitionist Sessions, where bands perform 3 songs live and answer 3 questions. Check out their performance of “Wake Me With a Kiss,” the first taste of another new song from their forth coming full length, Amor Ad Nauseaum, below. Then go over to Violitionist to see the rest of their live performance and read what the band has to say about being a band in a city with a saturated music scene, the benefits of co-op labels, and where they find motivation to create.
What a better day to kick off a tour than on Friday the 13th! The dudes of Aan aren’t scared and are starting things tonight with a home town show at Doug Fir in Portland, OR, helping Pegasus Dream celebrate their EP release. Aan will then make their way out to Denver for the UMS with Shabazz Palaces, A Place to Bury Strangers, Cloud Nothings and more, and returning home in time for the PDX Pop Now festival. Check out more tour dates below.

Here is “I Don’t Need Love,” off their forthcoming full length, Amor Ad Nauseum.
The track is available for download from their bandcamp page and check out the live performance of “I Don’t Need Love” captured by Portland blog Into the Woods below.
